Read an excerpt from Mary Birdie’s fun cozy mystery KILL IT BY SKILLET:
“Did you see anything suspicious?”
“Smoke plumes. And where there’s smoke, I fear it’s a kitchen fire,” I said.
He eyed me. “The flames did start in the kitchen. How did you know that, Miss Meyer?”
“Unlucky guess,” I said. My chest tightened. I coughed loudly from the smoke. Could that mean Luke Knight had an accident in the kitchen while testing out the new fry pan? I hoped not. Fries weren’t that difficult to make. And where were his guests?
Detective Hawkes continued, “You suddenly look perplexed. Do you know more than you’re telling me?”
“No, I’m just worried about the residents. Where are they?”
Then another detective, shaped like a waffle, walked toward us. “We found a body,” he said to Detective Hawkes. “He’s dead on the kitchen floor. There’s a frying pan next to his head.”
I gasped. The new frying pan! The one I sold him. Could that be involved in the crime?
“Again, Ms. Meyer,” said Detective Hawkes, “You looked distressed.”
At this point, Pickles was scratching the inside of the carrier. I cradled her in my arms.
“Cookware is my life.”
“And it looks like it took a life,” he said.
